So I’m working on getting real serious with my skin care routine and I’m doing more research on various routines and processes.
One I’ve always heard about but never really gave much attention to was toning. Now I’ve done my research and I’m here to share what I’ve learnt and experienced. I am also sharing these on my YouTube channel you can check out, my channel name is Toni Unboxed.
What is toning?
Toning is basically removing excess oils from the skin. It is a skin cleansing process that involves getting rid of dead cells and excess oils leaving the skin looking and feeling fresher, softer and a lot brighter.
It also helps to shrink pores, even out discoloration and dark spots.
What is a Toner
A toner is a serum or wash that removes dirt, dead cells and excess oils from the skin.
You may think, ‘I wash my face twice a day, I don’t need this,’ but trust me, even after washing your face if you use a toner soaked cotton pad to clean round your face you’ll see a little bit of brown on the pad. That doesn’t mean you don’t know how to wash, it’s just how it is. Toning supplements face washing.

Benefits of Toning the skin
It shrinks pores.
A good toner unclogs pores and shrinks the pores making your face look and feel a lot smoother.
It moisturizes the skin.
Most toners are humectants, this means they accept water from the atmosphere into the skin leaving the skin moisturized and feeling softer.
It restores the skin pH
pH is basically the acidity or alkalinity of the skin with neutral being 7, anything less is acidic and anything more is alkaline. Now the face is usually acidic with a pH of 5 to 6 but soaps which are alkaline can easily throw off this balance causing increase in skin oil production. Using a toner will help restore the right skin pH.
It protects the skin from impurities.
Because toners shrink pores, they make it harder for impurities and dirt to get into the skin keeping your face cleaner overall.
It’s a quick and easy way ro refresh your skin.
Imagine you’re on the go and your face feels so oily or you’re tired of your make up. All you need to do is visit the nearest bathroom and with your toner you’ll be left with your face feeling fresher and lighter.
It gets rid of toxins.
Environmental toxins like smoke can get stuck to the face during the day. What a toner does is get rid of those toxins making the face cleaner and healthier.
It reduces / prevents acne.
Using a toner will significantly reduce acne because it’ll eliminate a number of the reasons that cause acne.
What ingredients make a good toner?
Rose water has hydration properties which is a must have for a good toner. It can actually be used on its own as a toner.
Chamomile contains properties that soothe the skin.
Tea tree oil
Tea tree oil can help prevent acne and reduce scarring.
Vitamin E helps reduce wrinkles, fine lines and keeps the skin soft and looking young.
