How to grow long healthy natural hair on a budget

When people think natural hair, they think cost. They think of the prices of conditioners and shampoos and oils and salon appointments. The cost of protective hairstyles and a lot more.

I agree, natural hair may be expensive to maintain. Then again, all hair may be expensive to maintain, all you have to do is set your budget.

From experience I can boldly tell you that to grow long healthy natural hair you don’t need to spend hundreds of dollars.

I have put together 5 tips to show you how to achieve long healthy natural hair without breaking the bank.

1. DIY all the way

This is the most important tip, hence it being the first. DIY will save you a lot of money in your natural hair journey.

Why spend so much money on products when you can very well make them and they’ll be just as good or even better?

You can find DIY recipes for hair masks, moisturizing sprays, shampoos, conditioners and many more. I wrote a post on how to make shealoe butter at home and sesame seed oil you can read here.

I have a YouTube channel set up to teach DIYs for skin and hair care, you can subscribe to it here.

2. Avoid over manipulation

I wrote a post on the negative effects of over manipulation that you can read here. Not only does it increase breakage and shedding but you’ll be using a lot more product than you need.

Avoiding over manipulation saves you the extra product and over a long time saves you coins.

3. Enter giveaways

Sometimes last year, I gave away a full product lime for the KUIcare brand and I know a lot of brands and products who do the same.

Follow bloggers and brands on your instagram page and keep an eye out for giveaways. They are a great way to get free products and save you some money.

You can follow me on instagram @Adropofblack and some brands that often host giveaways like @Darkandlovely, @TGINatural, @auntjackiescurlsandcoils.

4. Surround yourself with the right people

I mention this all the time. Having naturalista’s around you will help you cut cost a lot. They understand your hair and know how to take care of it.

With such people around, instead of spending so much money in a salon, they can help you style or treat your hair and you can do the same for them saving you both money.

5. Set up a regimen

I wrote a more detailed post on setting up a regimen hair and fully explained it in my online course, demystifying natural hair.

Your hair regimen will determine how often you go to a salon for treatments, how often you protective style, how often you wash your hair and in totality how much money you’ll spend.

Set up a detailed regimen planning your year as far as you can go and plan in that light. Buy the products and extensions you will need during the sale periods so you’ll be set for the rest of the year or half the year.

I do this a lot and it helps me overall save cost and reduce the amount of emergency hair expenses.

Which of these will you be practicing to save you some money? I would love to hear from you.

Save money by enrolling for my free online course ‘Kiss dry hair goodbye‘. It also makes you a member of the black beauties squad and gives you access to fresh informations and freebies!
