How much is too much? -moisturizing

Hey guys!

This is the last of the how much is too much series and I will be talking on moisturizing or applying products to your hair.

Moisturizing your hair is really important as it is what makes your hair soft and manageable, all hair needs moisture but african type hair needs it even more due to its curly nature and the fact that it takes longer for hair to travel down the shaft.

How do you moisturize your hair?

The two most common methods of moisturizing hair are the

  • LOC: Liquid leave in, oil, cream.
  • LCO: Liquid leave in, cream, oil.

People have modifies this in their own ways that you may hear of LCOC or LOCO because hair depends on what works for you and a simple coating may not be enough.

How ever, some people use moisturizing methods because that is what their favourite YouTuber does or their friend and it may not necessarily work for them. If you have fine hair it will be unnecessary to coat your hair with more layers or more products and if you have thick hair strands you may need more product for each shaft.

How much is too much?

Too much is when per your hair type you’re applying too much moisturizing products or you’re applying the products too often. Some people have to moisturize their hair once in two days but others can stretch up to a week. If you can stretch up to a week and you moisturize every two days then you are being too much.

Too much moisturizing or products will;

  • Weigh your hair down and make it harder to achieve some styles
  • Cause product build up on your scalp and make you need to wash your hair more often than you originally would need too or block your scalp pores and lead to conditions like dandruff.

Finding your balance

You have to go with what works for you and this will take patience. It’s better to start with either and LOC or LCO and check your hair till you notice it is dry, if it gets dry after two days or three days then you can make that your interval for moisturizing.

If you feel two of three days is too much for you because your busy you can try the LOCO or LCOC which involves more product to help you lock in moisture, this may increase your interval by a day or two but if you notice your hair is heavier or getting flaky then you can revert to your former way. The key is to find a balance between too little and too much so your hair can have optimum moisture at all times.

Other ways to retain moisture

  • Wear a satin bonnet; This would serve as a barrier and stop your moisture from leaving your hair into your pillow or cotton sheets.
  • Ensure that your hair is well saturated with water when you moisturize, applying product on dry hair will have less effect than if the hair is moisturized.

How often do you moisturize your hair and what methods do you use?
